Easy alternatives to a double stroller

Even though we will have a toddler and a newborn in early 2022, I have decided not to purchase a double stroller. I’m not against double strollers at all, but it doesn’t seem like the best fit for our current lifestyle. This article is about easy alternatives to a double stroller.

When I first brought up the idea of getting a double stroller to my husband, he was adamantly against it. His reasoning was that they are expensive, they are big and bulky, and there were viable alternatives to a double stroller.

Overall, I didn’t disagree with him. Realistically, how long would we actually use this double stroller? Our toddler will be almost three when Baby #2 is born and she definitely prefers walking on her own versus riding in a stroller.

If our toddler needed to be in a stroller for whatever reason, I believe we could manage without a double stroller. In fact, the formal recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics is to limit stroller usage beyond 3 years old. (Source)

So, here are some easy alternatives to a double stroller.

1. Baby-wearing

alternatives to a double stroller

Baby-wearing is a wonderful alternative to purchasing a double stroller. When my daughter was an infant, there were many events where I preferred to wear her over toting around a big, bulky stroller.

If we are in a situation where our toddler needs the stroller, I wouldn’t hesitate to wear Baby #2. Plus, it’s a budget-friendly alternative to purchasing a double stroller.

My personal baby carrier recommendation is the Infantino carrier (click on image), which is ergonomic, expandable, and budget-friendly. It’s easy to get an infant in and out, plus you can front carry or back carry.

2. Buggy board

A buggy board is a roll-along board that attaches to most strollers. If you have an older toddler who mostly wants to walk but occasionally gets tired, he or she can easily jump on the buggy board and take a rest.

A buggy board is one of the best alternatives to a double stroller because you can purchase one for less than $75, they don’t take up a lot of space, and it’ll be fun for your toddler. Some buggy boards also come with a detachable seat for your toddler.

3. Wagon

Although we are not purchasing a double stroller, I would definitely consider getting a stroller wagon or canopy wagon once our infant can sit up. When my daughter was an infant, her daycare would stroll around the infants in a wagon and it was so adorable.

In my opinion, wagons are a little more interactive for children and allow them to have a 360-degree view of their surroundings. When we go to large public events with children, I tend to see more wagons over double strollers.

I personally adore Radio Flyer and they have a canopy wagon in their product line. There are also many other options available. I’ve linked some below from Amazon (click images).

4. Travel or lightweight stroller

When I brought up the idea of purchasing a double stroller to my husband, he reminded me that we also have a travel stroller! He does make a valid point. Although they might not be attached to one another, we technically have two strollers.

If you have a travel stroller or a lightweight stroller in addition to your travel system stroller, that’s the perfect alternative to getting a double stroller. It may not be as convenient as a double stroller, but it’s definitely an alternative. Plus, you’ll save so much money!

5. Tricycle stroller

My toddler loves her tricycle stroller and we tend to take a lot of walks with it instead of her regular stroller. The great thing about 4-in-1 stroller trikes is that they grow with your toddler and eventually turn into an actual tricycle. You can purchase them as young as 9 months old and they last until 5 years old!

This is an unconventional alternative to a double stroller.
